The Broom Bearers
My first wedding shoot at home in Chicago several years ago. Broom bearers symbolize an important and symbolic tradition for African Americans. Slaves were not allowed to be officially “married” by law in most states pre-civil war. This resulted in slaves creating their own tradition of “Jumping the Broom” during wedding ceremonies. Couples hold hands and a broom is placed beneath their feet. Broom bearers quietly walk down the aisle in the photo. Just before the couples is announced husband and wife. They leap from one life as separate individuals, into a new world together. Love pushes you forward. Love is a beautiful thing!
I just love this. 😍
